Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is a British television quiz show that offered a maximum cash prize of one million pounds for correctly answering successive multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty. One contestant played at a time and originally had no time limit to answer questions. Contestants were presented with the question and possible answers before they decided whether to attempt an answer or walk away with what they have already won. It was hosted by Chris Tarrant throughout its entire run.

It was one of the most successful British game shows, running for 15 years, until it ended in 2014, and it is the world's most adapted television format. Classic episodes are now shown on Challenge.

Since 2018, the revived series has been presented by Jeremy Clarkson. The revival fared well, and spawned a spin-off in Fastest Finger First.

Gameplay

Fastest Finger First

In the first part of the show, ten contestants are (Series 1) given a multiple-choice question with four possible answers. The fastest player to pick the right one wins, or are (Series 2 onwards) given four options to put into the right order: fastest to do so wins the chance to play for the million.

This round was dropped from 2010 to 2014, but was reinstated for the reboot. However, some episodes in the 2022 series also dropped this, as winners on daytime feeder show Fastest Finger First were fast-tracked in.

* In the reboot, the second safety net can be set anywhere between £2,000 and £500,000, not necessarily at the £32,000 question.

The player now has fifteen increasingly difficult general knowledge questions (twelve from 2007 until 2014) to answer, each with four answer options attached. Each question answered correctly puts the player one step further up the money ladder. They may walk away with the money they have at any time, and may see a question before electing to walk away. If they answer wrongly, they fall back to the last safety net they reached (traditionally £1,000 or £32,000; from 2007 until 2014 £50,000 and since 2018 the second safety net can be set wherever the contestant wishes).

From 2010 until 2014, the first seven questions were timed. Q1-2 had 15 seconds, Q3-7 had 30. Questions 8 through 12 had no time limit.

They have three (four from 2010) lifelines to help them:

50:50: Removes two of the three incorrect answers, leaving the contestant with one right and one wrong answer.
Phone-a-Friend: Gives the player 30 seconds to call a pre-determined contact to help them with the answer.
Ask the Audience: The studio audience suggests an answer using their keypads.

The fourth lifeline was either:

Switch (2002) or Flip (2010-14): The contestant switches out a question for another of the same difficulty.
Ask the Host (2018-): The contestant allows host Jeremy Clarkson to help with the question. Unlike Phone-a-Friend, he has unlimited time to talk the contestant through.

During the two series filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no studio audience, so the Ask the Audience lifeline was replaced by a second Phone-a-Friend.

The original working title was Cash Mountain.
Developers originally considered money trees including 20 questions to £5,248,000 or even £52,480,000. However, the public suggested they liked the idea of becoming an instant "millionaire" most, so the top prize was reduced.
Effervescent £32,000 winner Fiona Wheeler became a surprise celebrity after her appearance on the show. Her amusing reason for wishing to go on it - to relax in a chocolate bath - was instead granted by a local newspaper.
The first contestant, Graham Elwell, held the record for the fastest Fastest Finger First time - 0.69 seconds - for twenty-four years.
- He also forgot to use his Ask the Audience lifeline.
For the first episode, the show used a physical landline phone.
On a Series 2 episode in January 1999, the show's contestant, Martin Skillings, won £125,000, the largest game show cash prize win anywhere in the world at the time. The very next contestant, Ian Horswell, won the same amount.
- The episode broke the world record for the world's most money given away in a single episode - £266,000.
On 8 March 1999, Tony Kennedy from Blackpool, was asked a £64,000 question regarding the minimum number of strokes with which a tennis player can win a set. He answered 24, which was marked correct, however one could theoretically win with 12 strokes: Player A could serve 12 aces to win games one, three and five, then their opponent could double-fault 12 times, so A could win games two, four and six without hitting a shot and hence win the set after 12 shots. He was allowed to keep his eventual £125,000 winnings.
On 12 April 2001, player Richard Deeley received a cheque for £32,000, but threw it across the studio in a parody of Tarrant's "... but we don't want to give you that!" He got the next question wrong, and the producers refused to write him another cheque. His original one was cashed anyway.
On 11 February 2006, celebrity players Laurence and Jackie Llewelyn-Bowen were asked a question for £1,000,000 regarding the official motto of the United States translated from Latin. They answered "In God We Trust", however the right answer was "One Out of Many", becoming the only British players ever to lose the million.
- However, it was discovered this question was flawed; whilst "In God We Trust" has no Latin source, it is used as a motto of the USA, and "E Pluribus Unum", meaning 'One Out of Many' was never codified by law. The question technically had no correct answer, so Laurence and Jackie were invited back and were given another £1,000,000 question about the first person to travel into space twice (Gus Grissom). They walked away.

For Judith Keppel's victory, the confetti gun misfired, and none was set off.
Northern Irishman Steve Devlin became the first person to walk away on the £1,000,000 question whilst knowing the right answer. He had got on the show before, but escaped the studio after suffering a panic attack.
- During his £1,000,000 question he drunk Chris Tarrant's glass of water by mistake.
Pete Waterman and Simon Cowell had previously composed a track called Cloud 9 for the show, however it was rejected by producers, who put old friends Keith and Matthew Strachan in charge of remaking the track in five days to sound more moody and dramatic. However, the Strachans realised the show wouldn't work with the music simply redone, so worked alternating day/night shifts to make the now-famous soundtrack, which was continuously updated and perfected throughout Series 1.
- In 2000, the soundtrack was released on CD. Copies are now worth over £250.
